Connecting a Stratux/GDL 90 ADS-B receiver to an iPhone is straightforward since the device broadcasts its own Wi-Fi access point and sends data using the standard GDL90 protocol, which is compatible with many aviation apps on iOS, including AeroADSB and AeroWeather Pro (with Captain subscription).
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Power on your Stratux device
Plug it in or turn it on. It will boot up and create a Wi-Fi network. The default network name (SSID) is usually stratux(all lowercase), and it’s an open network with no password. - Connect your iPhone to the Stratux Wi-Fi network
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Tap Wi-Fi.
- Look for the network named stratux and tap it to connect.
- Your iPhone will show a checkmark next to it once connected. (Note: You’ll lose internet access while connected, as Stratux doesn’t provide internet— this is normal.)
- Open AeroADSB app
- Launch the app.
- The Stratux should appear automatically as a connected device (often listed as “Stratux” or a generic ADS-B/GPS source). It will show a green status indicator.
- If it doesn’t appear right away, restart the app or toggle Wi-Fi off/on.
- (Optional) Access the Stratux web interface for status/settings
- While connected to the stratux Wi-Fi, open Safari.
- Type http://192.168.10.1 in the address bar.
- This loads the Stratux dashboard, where you can check status, towers in range, calibrate AHRS (if equipped), or adjust settings.
Troubleshooting Tips
- If the device doesn’t show in your app: Ensure your app has Local Network access enabled (iOS Settings > AeroADSB > Local Network > On). This is required on newer iOS versions.
- No Wi-Fi network visible? Double-check power to Stratux and wait a minute for boot-up.
- For AHRS/attitude features: Calibrate via the web interface if needed.
- Multiple devices: Several iPhones/iPads can connect to the same Stratux Wi-Fi at once.
